Reveal and Demo v1

While writing the afterstories for Blooming Nightshade, I realized I wasn't quite ready to let go of the characters of that game. I wanted to see more of what these characters would do after high school; how they would change and grow thanks to their experiences in Blooming Nightshade. So while I finished up version 9 of Blooming Nightshade, I started outlining a sequel with the working title "Flowering Nightshade".

With Flowering Nightshade, I wanted to do a few things differently from Blooming Nightshade:

  • The route storylines in Blooming Nightshade felt a bit short in retrospect, with some characterization waiting until the endings/afterstories. To fix this in Flowering Nightshade, the story takes place over a full year (11-12 events per route, instead of 6-7).
  • It seems like Blooming Nightshade wasn't as clear as it could be that you could be friends with other characters without cheating on your current love interest. To fix this, Flowering Nightshade gives the player three decision points per month and locks route advancement to one event per month.
  • Due to some of the characters being underage in Blooming Nightshade, sexuality felt like an issue I had to avoid addressing too directly. In Flowering Nightshade, all of the characters are adults, allowing certain character traits and storylines to be more openly examined.

There are a few other considerations I had in mind when outlining the game, but those may be a topic for a later time. For now, here's what we have in Demo v1:

  • First draft of the prologue, Izumi's route, Nanami's route, and about 2/3rds of Kiyomi's route
  • Some events have blank text or placeholder text, as well as missing/incorrect backgrounds
  • Scene gallery is locked for now

Due to this being an early draft/build, some aspects of the story and gameplay are still a bit malleable. Let me know what you think of the game so far!

It took some some time to recall which of the girl I chose in 1st game. It was Nanami! Cute, shy baker who didn't believe in her skills.

Is actual version bugged? I didn't see any sprites except two of MC's in the start of the game.

You could change the storytelling a bit. Especially if the game is still not finished. More detailed and eventful plot would be cool. And maybe without jumping week or  two week further with each scene?

The plot and scene are still pretty cool, tho. It was good idea to take the realationship to "the next level".

You change synopsis a bit. It spoils a bit too much about the girls.

No CGs :(

The gameplay of demo ends on "July 2020" screen, right? After thet it feels empty and not filled.

Thanks for the feedback. A few responses to your points:

I didn't see any sprites except two of MC's in the start of the game.

The portrait art was not complete when Demo v1 came out, so only the first scene has portrait art.

And maybe without jumping week or  two week further with each scene?

Some of the story beats are still in flux when it comes to what will or won't be in future versions, but the plan remains to have major events take place each month in-universe, similar to how the first game had events take place each week. With 11 playable (non-prologue) months and 6 characters, that's already 66 events to write.

No CGs :(

For the moment, CGs are not planned for the game. Since the game has two different aspect ratios (2:3 on phones and 4:3 on desktops), figuring out how to handle CGs might be difficult.

The gameplay of demo ends on "July 2020" screen, right? After thet it feels empty and not filled.

Some routes went almost all the way to the end in Demo v1, but the weekly intro dialogue was not written for every week. As such, those text boxes would likely appear blank.

In addition to all of the above, I'd like to mention that progress on this game is going a bit slow right now while I work on the v10 update for Blooming Nightshade. I also feel like I'm going to take some of the design decisions from that update and apply them to this game. (For example, the player will get a chance to see each of the characters in the prologue and first month or two, but the game will then lock you into the route you pick for the rest of the playthrough.) Because of the reworks involved, Demo v2 will probably still only have Izumi, Kiyomi, and Nanami routes available (with the rest being pushed back to at least v3).

Hopefully that answered some of your questions. Let me know if anything still sticks out.
